Koh Samui is quite a large island but luckily there is a decent transport system (by Thai standards) for you to get from place to place. The geography of the island is very mountainous, the inner landscape is not easy to get to, with steep hillsides covered by dense jungle. There are few people living here and very few roads that cross the centre. Instead, most of the population lives on the flat land by the seaside – there is a wide ring road that goes all around Koh Samui.
To go anywhere on the ring road it is very simple. The cheapest way is to wait for a pick up truck which has two rows of seats in the back. These operate like buses and will follow a set route and stop for more passengers on the way – unlike buses there is no set timetable and no bus stops – you just need to put your hand out to get one to stop. Alternatively there are private taxis and motorbike taxis
